The Dwarven Dynasties
The dwarven people have finally recovered from their terrible losses in the war with the gnomes, though tensions remain high. With their new connections to the world through the Illumians, they are thriving as much as in the years of yore.
However, the larger source of danger and the reason the dwarfs were so poorly able to defend themselves from the attacks from above was that also fought on another front: the Ushemoi from the underdark. The Ushemoi have been a constant source of danger that predated the gnomish invasion and continues to this day. Thankfully, they are more concerned with controlling the underdark proper, but their occasional forays into the middledark have been the stuff of Dwarven nightmares, and are the reason that most dwarven defenses point downwards.
Currently, the dwarfs have grown close with the Illumians, who they don’t fully trust, but who are easy to trade with. They still have the gnomes as intermediaries of convenience and necessity between themselves and the Elven Matriarchies. They hold no ill will towards the elves (they hardly know them except through their goods), but it would be an extreme undertaking to set up trade caravans from Illumian cities to Elven ones instead of taking the direct route with the gnomes absorbing a small commission for the conveyance. They know even less of the Killoren or wood elves (or, for that matter the Illumian Root Majuscules) since most dwarfs are far too agoraphobic to leave their tunnels, or at least dense cities. They get along well with (and enjoy the company of) the mongrelfolk, but don’t consider them a major power.
