The Ritual of the Word Made Flesh

A human monk, scholar, and wizard named Talmuid discovered common threads and patterns in magical spells across numerous dead languages he was translating. He developed these linguistic components of magic into a full language that he called Illumian. He found that the words of the language had magical resonance in the speaker and those who heard it. He sought to create the perfect speakers and receivers of this language, and after much trial and error created The Ritual of the Word Made Flesh, which turned Talmuid into the first Illumian, the human-like beings with floating Illumian words around their head who are the physical embodiment of the language. Talmuid shared the transformation with all at the monastery who wished it, created several hundred Illumians. However, he became concerned that the ritual could be used in destructive ways and so split up the instructions and had various monks keep the parts safe and hidden. Upon his deathbed, Talmuid made one final utterance that raised him into a demigod, and he is now known as Utterlight, The First. [Much more of the first two hundred years of the history of the Illumian people can be read in Races of Destiny.]
